according to this report, a HR manager earns more than a marketing manager on the average. hmmmm.... it is not of much consequential difference though.
but! after taking all the HR mods, i honestly find no motivation in HR. is there any jobs out there that balances marketing and HR? hmm..
questions:
1) marketing or hr, which offers better opportunity for one to climb the ladder to managerial position
2) to what extent will you sacrifice interest for pay. interesting but long working hours? or mundane but 9-5??
3) how will you know where your true interest lies?

Good that you're thinking about this now but take all these surveys with a pinch of salt. You need to know how many people from each function they surveyed.
I can't answer for marketing, but here are a few perspectives on HR:
1) There are many specialisations in HR itself. If you go into comp & ben for example, the market for it is very small, but those that hire these roles pay alot. Alternatively, you can choose to be a generalist and do the full spectrum of HR.
2) It is easier to move from industry to industry for HR because it is generally similiar across the board.
3) If you choose this route, you have to be discerning to know whether the company sees HR as a strategic function (to improve performance) or an administrative function (eg. handling payroll, leave administration etc). Generally MNCs take the former view and hold better prospects at learning.
4) Ladders are always there for you to climb - just make sure you're happy with what you do and it's not all because of the money. However, if you want to be the CEO or GM of a company, I'm afraid to disappoint you. Most of them have finance or sales backgrounds.
5) If you love what you do, you'll be good at it. If you're good at what you do, the pay will come naturally.
6) Interests change. The only to find out is to try out as many things as possible and evaluate from there. Determine what motivates you and search for something that can give you that. Motivations can range from wanting to lead, to having high pay, to being given autonomy, having free time, serving a cause...
Hope it helps. Let me know if you wanna talk more about this k? :)
man.. i was just thinking of asking u about this when i see you online. but YOU got me first. thanks jesss! yea, i agree the only way to find out is to try for as many things as possible just that there dont seem to be much time for trial now eh? regarding point 2, i guess thats the prob. u will be doing the same things but maybe meeting different people, like recruiting different kind of ppl. point 3, HR as a strat role of course! cant imagine just processing payroll day after day... i'd talk to u more when i see u online yea?
